Is it Snowing?

Is it Snowing?
A variable day.

February 20, 2025

This afternoon at Anson B. Nixon Park the snow was flying, until it wasn't. A day of dramatic skies, bursts of snow and a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers.

Male on the left (note the red cheek patch), Female on the right.

Pileated Woodpeckers will excavate a number of cavities in trees throughout the year. One they will use as a nest, and the others for roosting during the night or bad weather. Other species of birds will use the cavities making Pileated Woodpeckers a valuable part of the Ecosystem.

A closer look at the male.
