This Week at Nixon Park - May 31-June 7

Sadly it appears that a predator of some description has snatched the eggs out of the Green heron nest (last week's look at the nest and eggs). I checked on the nest a number of times this week and did not see the Heron sitting, nor the eggs.

Another look at the Double-Crested Cormorant, A watchful Green Heron, Tree Swallow, Robin, Bluejay, Song Sparrow, and another Song Sparrow!, Chicks in the Wood Thrush nest we first saw last week.

Mayapples maturing (many have already been browsed by deer or other Mayapple aficionados, Jack-in-the-pulpit spadix seeds developing (note the withered spathe), Wineberry flowers, Hemp dogbane, Canadian wild ginger (I have it on good authority this is NOT the ginger in Canada Dry), Swamp White Oak sapling in an old stump.

Margined Caligrapher Fly, Two-spotted Bumble Bee, Summer Azure, Spurred Ceratina (a tiny species of carpenter bee). Fully developed se capsule of the Trout Lily (about 1/2 inch long) showing individual seeds (here's more abut Trout Lilies)
