This Week at the Park

Not often that a Barn Swallow will pose, they are usually on the move.

There's so much to see in April! Here's some of the observations from this week.

Left to Right, Row 1 - Chickadee, Carolina Wren, Cardinal- Row 2 - Green Heron, Song Sparrow, Red-bellied Woodpecker - Row 3 - Robin, Blue Jay

Row 1 - Jacob's Ladder, Spring Beauties, Sedge Row 2 - Star of Bethlehem (with visiting Margined Calligrapher Fly, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Mayapple (more about the Mayapple) Row 3 Trout Lily's are about done flowering, the seed pods are maturing.

Sensitive Fern, Christmas Fern, Christmas Fern close up, Hay-scented Fern

Bullfrog, Painted Turtle, Largemouth Bass, Eastern Musk Turtle.

Row 1 - These are all Mining Bees, it's difficult to detrmine exactly what species from a photo, I'll update if I learn more. Row 2 - Fragile Forktail Damselfly, Eastern Carpenter Bee, Two-spotted Bumble Bee

This Week at Nixon Park - June 21-28

A hot week. Enough said about that. I like to walk slowly through the beech grove when the weather is hot (truth be told I walk slowly everywhere when the weather is hot). The canopy of trees shades the trail almost completely, and the undergrowth is lush, cool and green.

Swallows

Tree Swallows, Northern Rough-winged Swallows and Barn Swallows frequent the ponds and meadows of the park. Stand quietly and watch as they speed by, often just a few feet away, darting and weaving through the air so effortlessly you'd swear they're doing it just for fun.

This Week at Nixon Park - June 14-21

Another week of rain and unseasonably cool temperatures topped off by a strong storm with around an inch and a quarter of rain and 50 MPH wind gusts. When they swept through the park those winds felled a few trees and many branches.
